Material Data Sheet: Pure Silicone
Material
Pure silicone is a material that has many advantages and only a few minor drawbacks. It does not contain latex, phthalates, toxins, or anything that is not body-safe. Since this material is non-porous, it can be sanitized. As a result, it is a hygienic, hypoallergenic, and even medical-grade material.
Silicone is a flexible material that retains its initial shape after being bended or even twisted. Silicone is usually firm, but it can have different consistencies, squishier or firmer, while still retaining all of its qualities.
Silicone can have many different textures and colors, which does not fade with time. Silicone does not really have any smell or taste, but a smell can linger for a few hours to several days on an anal toy.
A water-based lubricant is recommended with any silicone toy, since a silicone-based lubricant may melt and degrade the toy permanently.
Care
Silicone can be washed with soap and warm water, a toy cleaner, as well as sex toy wipes. It can be sanitized by boiling for three minutes, soaked in a 10% bleach solution or placed on the top rack of the dishwasher in a cycle with no soap. If the silicone toy is a vibrator, it is only recommended to wipe the surface of the toy with the 10% bleach solution. Even if the toy is waterproof, the heat from boiling or the dishwasher could damage the mechanism.
If a silicone toy is shared with a partner, you can use any of the sanitization methods or place a condom over it before use if you do not want to go through the trouble of washing your toy in the middle of your sexual activities. You must also keep in mind not to use a toy vaginally after using it anally without prior thorough cleaning or sanitization.
Regardless of the material, remember to wash your sex toys before and after each use.
Storage
Silicone tends to attract lint, dust and pet hair and it is recommended to store it in a lint-free bag or a plastic bag. Toys made of pure silicone can also be placed within the same storage bag if it is large enough, but not with other types of silicone or they could melt, just like being in contact with a silicone-based lubricant.
